About The Boathouse

The Boathouse interiors have been lovingly designed and thoughtfully curated by owners David and Tracy. Statement pieces in the living area include a beautiful hand crafted solid wooden dining table, a cosy log burning stove and a plush teal sofa.

Davids love for photography is evident throughout the cottage, with a selection of impressive wildlife photographs on display.

Wonderful Guest Reviews

We are incredibly proud of the reviews and guest feedback we have received, along with the wonderful messages our guests have left in our Guestbook. We take great pride in the fact that many of our guests return year after year!

Our property managers Kieran and Helen live locally in Woolacombe, and are on hand during your stay should you need help or recommendations.

"We had such a special and memorable family break at the Boathouse - waking every morning to the stupendous views of the bay, watching the glow of the sun on the rocks through the porthole as it set every evening, and listening to the waves on the rocks at night was truly spectacular. The house itself is beautifully furnished and surpassed all our expectations."

"We loved our stay at the Boathouse. The location is absolutely stunning, and the house thoughtfully and beautifully renovated. We loved all of your recommendations, the scenic walks, the food, sea swimming, and generally getting away from the hussle of life! We look forward to returning again soon! Thank you so much for hosting us."

"The Boathouse at Lee is superb. Very well furnished and equipped, the housekeeping was excellent, it was spotless when we arrived, with some nice touches. The Boathouse has a prime position, slightly elevated with views overlooking the entire bay, which is totally unspoilt. If peace and quiet and being off the beaten track is your thing then this is the place."

History of The Boathouse

The Boathouse was originally known as Black Pit Cottage, taking its name from the stretch of sand running up the beach between the rocks in front of the cottage. Years ago, coal was brought to the area by ship and unloaded into carts or dumped on the beach to be carted inland. It is thought this is why the sandy strip is known as Black Pit.

However, in order to reflect the recreation and changing of the cottage, we felt it was fitting to name it after a different moment in its long, rich history. Later on, when the tourist industry in Lee was at its height, this very building was used as a boathouse, storing vessels offering trips around the bay. It is for this very reason we named our home The Boathouse.
